Building Skills, Creating Momentum
When Isaac Smorong enrolled in the Holistic Skilled Labour Program, he knew this path would lead him to bigger things. Sure enough, these skills led him to the Suncor Haul Truck Operator Program and a career he is excited for.
Isaac, 24, is a proud member of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. He first learned about the Holistic Skilled Labour Program through Facebook, and with encouragement from his family, decided to apply.
“It seemed like a good opportunity to build skills and strengthen my resume,” Isaac shared.
From the start, the balance of independence and support stood out. The Holistic Skilled Labour Program coordinators created an environment where participants could work at their own pace while still receiving guidance when needed.
A typical day in the Holistic Skilled Labour Program involved focused, self-directed work, completing industry-recognized safety ticket modules on a laptop. The schedule was structured around the timeframe of the course but flexible enough to spend extra time on modules that required deeper attention. That balance helped Isaac stay organized, accountable, and confident in his progress.
One unexpected takeaway came during his H2S Alive certification.
“The most interesting part was the H2S course it really opened my eyes to the real hazards in the oil sands, the proper use of detection equipment, breathing apparatus, and rescue techniques,” Isaac said. “Now I feel much more prepared and confident for my haul truck operator role.”
Beyond certifications, connection made the experience meaningful. One of the highlights for Isaac was completing the program alongside a childhood friend — a reminder that learning and growth are often even more meaningful when shared.
With his certifications complete and new confidence in place, Isaac applied at Suncor and was given the opportunity to participate in their Haul Truck Operator Program. Isaac is now gaining hands-on experience through his co-op placement at Syncrude’s Aurora site, continuing to build practical skills and workplace experience.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Isaac encourages others to take that first step.
“It’s a great learning environment. It helped me develop my resume and build useful skills.”
Programs like the Holistic Skilled Labour Program do more than provide certifications. They create momentum, equipping participants with foundational skills, confidence, and pathways into further training and employment.
The Holistic Skilled Labour Program is offered through the Athabasca Tribal Council, and in partnership with Koda-Cree Ltd. The Province of Alberta is working in partnership with the Government of Canada to provide employment support programs and services.
