Medical Transportation Overview

Athabasca Tribal Council medical transportation provides transportation for clients to access necessary health services. Medical Transportation benefits are in coordination with NIHB Policies. Transportation may be provided for clients to access the following types of medical services: Diagnostic testing, Physician, Hospital care, and any other services covered by NIHB.

Our medical transportation department also helps with doing claim reimbursements for those who must travel, and services could not be booked in time to do so.

Please ensure you read all our policies, no aggressive behaviour will be tolerated.

Medical transportation policies

All policies are developed by Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations, Inuit Health Branch.

  • Must provide at least 48 hours notice to the medical transportation team. There are NO arrangements made for same day appointments after 3:00pm.

    Notice must include:

    Confirmation of appointment

    Treaty number

    Name of Member

    Date of birth

    Address

Should the member require an escort, the letter for appointment confirmation needs to state that an escort is required.

  • ATC can not provide transportation services for in-town members to their appointments. This policy is in place to ensure the optimal allocation of resources and to better serve our community's broader needs. Members are encouraged to explore alternative transportation options available within the town. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. For any questions or further assistance, please contact us.

  • Members must provide proof of appointment attendance to be eligible for reimbursement for travel, meals and accommodations.

  • At this time hotels in Fort McMurray are limited due to the state of local emergency and mandatory evacuation orders.

Members are expected to act respectfully while staying in accommodation. This includes adhering to the policies and expectations of the hotel.

If members are asked to leave the hotel due to bad behaviour or breaching of the hotel’s rules members are responsible for finding their own lodging. Transportation back to member’s community will be provided.

All damages, misplaced items, or additional charges above what was pre-approved by the Athabasca Tribal Council are the sole responsibility of the member who was registered to the room. The Athabasca Tribal Council is not responsible for payment and will bill back any charges to the member for collection.

Athabasca Tribal Council reserves the right to place members on a reimbursement only basis when deemed appropriate and as a result of breaching any of the policies of the medical transportation program, including but not limited to aggressive/inappropriate behaviour, property damage, having unregistered guests in the hotel, missed appointments etc.
