Week 3 – Responsibility & Accountability

Response ability

As a functioning adult, your “ability to respond to circumstances, situations, and events is your responsibility and our laws are designed with this in mind. When we engage with the outside world, we are our own first responder to a crisis. This changes if we are unconscious, seriously injured, in shock or in need of help we are not capable of providing for ourselves. Our personal safety requires us to be conscious, and physically capable. This allows for a greater “response ability” than if we were impaired or disabled in physical or cognitive function.

Personal responsibility involves recognizing the consequences of our choices and accepting and being accountable for the outcomes, whether they are positive or negative. It encourages us to act ethically, fulfill our duties and obligations, and strive to make responsible decisions that consider the well-being of ourselves and others. It is important to note that personal accountability never implies blame or judgment towards you as a sexual assault survivor.

Each individual’s healing journey is unique, and the process may take time. Personal accountability actions focus on empowering and promoting individual well-being by seeking assistance and support. It is not a means to place undue pressure or expectations on oneself.

This week we further incorporate the visions and values of Athabaskan culture and the community as a whole, into the youth empowerment planning and reflect on how it influences our own response to the world around us. This way personal responsibility becomes a skill and an integrated part of “the Self.” When you know what you want from life, you take steps to move towards that greater vision, while loving yourself where you are at, in any given moment.

As we do this, our inner world will change and be reflected in our outer world.
